Advice about hysterectomy ?

I have to have a total abdominal hysterectomy. I was wondering if there is anyone who would have any advice as to what to take to the hospital with me, what I need to do pre-op, and advice on the healing process afterwards. Thanks !Advice about hysterectomy ?
1 priority--get a second opinion. Do NOT let them take out any organ in your body that doesn't HAVE to come out. Make sure that it's medically necessary to take out both of your ovaries AND your uterus. If it's only necessary to take out one of them, then only take out one of them. An unnecessary hysterectomy (uterus removal) can mess up your pelvic floor muscles. An unnecessary ovary removal shortens lifespan, causes sexual problems, memory problems, mood problems, dry skin, bone problems, etc.

#2 Bring a good skin cream to the hospital, like Eucerin.

#3 Ask your doctor if he/she'll give you Colace--this is a stool softener. The painkillers they give you make you constipated, which can be painful and uncomfortable, but the Colace treats that. But check with your doctor first--don't just take it without asking.

Also: do Kegel exercises, and keep in mind you're not going to be allowed to drive or lift anything over 5 pounds for a month.

If you're getting your ovaries removed too, and going into surgical menopause, discuss hormone replacement options before the surgery. And check this out: http://surmeno.blogspot.com/2006/07/tabl鈥?/a>
